As frequent readers of Nymag.com we’re always checking for new restaurant openings in the metro, specifically Brooklyn, area. We were excited when we saw some coverage on a cool pizza spot called Saraghina located in the heart of Bed-stuy, BK, but this ain’t Sal’s Pizza from the movie “Do the Right Thing”. The Italian born Edoardo Mantelli and Massimiliano Nanni are dishing up some very Neapolitan style pizza. We decided to walk over to Saraghina and experience it for ourselves. We were very surprised at the shack looking establishment which was made mostly out of recycled materials. It resembled something you’d find in the Italiam countryside.
We walked in to see two pizzaioli masters slinging dough into the lovely brick oven. I must say it looked very authentic inside and I’m sure I bumped into one of the owners who was hugging on a pack of cigarettes outside. The spot is well sized and has a restaurant area where families, lovers and Brooklynites dined away. We grabbed the menu and order one Margherita and one Prosciutto/Funghi pizzas to go. The Italian gentlemen hands us our boxes of pizza and gives an education about origination of the name “Saraghina” which is the name of a character in the french film Fellini’s 8 1/2.
We decided to pick some wine to pair with our meal and went to a boutique wine shop called Olivino. We were surprised to learn that they have a list that pairs wines with Saraghina’s amazing pizza options. We snatched up a Vinho Verde (Alianca) and Chardonay/Melon de Bourgogne (Jardin de la Fruitiere) and literally ran home in anticipation of our wonderful meal. We finally arrived home and made plates for two, propped ourselves up in bed and watched “American Gangster” for the 13th time (I know what you’re thinking but give me a break, this was the best cable option at the time). Although the movie selection may not have been the most appropriate it didn’t matter because our taste buds were on Cloud 9.
The venture of trying a new restaurant and pairing wines with a meal is a wonderful option for a second or third date. This romantic blend of pizza and wine gave us the feeling of being on vacation without leaving Bed-stuy. We highly recommend Saraghina’s and must mention its not only pizza. While waiting on our pizza we notice a chalkboard in the corner that listed it’s daily specials- seared bluefish, liguini with seafood, the list went on. The menu also lists a selection of salads, cured meats, cheeses, and desserts, as well as weekend brunch. The best thing we witnessed on our way out was the sign that read B.Y.O.B. and if you dont know what that means we seriously may not be able to help you.
